All India Institute of Medical Technologists

19th National Congress of BLS

 

The most coveted 19th National Congress on Biomedical Laboratory Science, organized by All India Institute of Medical Technologists was held on 5th & 6th December, 2009 at ScienceCity, Kolkata. More than 250 delegates attended the congress from different parts of India. The Congress was Inaugurated by Prof. Saugata Roy, Hon’ble Minister of State for Urban Development, Govt. of India. Shri Jogen Chowdhury, Proffesor Emeritus and eminent painter also present in the function as Special Guest and he released the Organisation’s Journal   ‘Medical Technology’. The Key Note address was presented by Dr. Sabitri Sanyal,Former Professor & Head, Pathology, CalcuttaMedicalCollege & Hospital.

 

On the occasion of Biomedical Laboratory Science Day a unique Panel discussion (Topic: Present Diagnostic facilities available in India is Standard & Cost effective) was organized. Eminent Speakers from different professions  presented their views and opinions. Notable among them were Dr. Subir Kr. Dutta, Ex-Dean, UCM, CalcuttaUniversity, Prof. M. K. Chakraborty, CalcuttaUniversity, Dr. Kakali Ghosh Dastider, Hon’ble Member of Parliamernt, Dr. Debasish Basu, Prof. & Head, Dept. of Medicine, NIH, Ms. Mala Saha, Hon’ble Member of Legislative Assembly and Dr. M.B. Girotra, Pathologists, NIH. All the speakers expressed their experiences in connection with diagnosis and treatment and suggested that West Bengal should have facilities for all sorts of rare and critical diagnostic tests. They also opined that the results from different laboratories are not equally reliable. The programme were Chaired by Dr. Manabendra Kunar Sanyal..

 

In the two days Scientific Seminar more than 30 eminent Medical Scientists from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai presented their valuable talk. Specially, Dr. Debidas Ghosh, Prof.& Head, Dept. of Biomedical Laboratory Science and Management, VidyasagarUniversity spoke on Diabet induced male fertility. Dr. Prosanto Chowdhury, Laoratory and Medical Director, Cordlife Sciences India Ltd discussed on Therpeutics a new definition. Mr. N.N. Ghosh The Scientific Session was Chaired by Dr. S.K. Dutta. On 6th December, In the concluding session Shri Sultan Ahmed, Hon’ble Minister of State for Tourism, Govt. of India  distributed the award and certificates among the members.

 

Mr. R.K. Acharyya, Chairman, Organizing Committee informed that the objective of the Congress is to develop the skills and knowledge of the BLS through face to face interaction among the BLS of different places. He stated that after four years Kolkata is holding this National Congress. He also told that AIIMT has hosted the 28th IFBLS World Congress of Biomedical Laboratory Science in The Ashok, New Delhi from 24-28 August, 2008. More than 500 delegates of 35 countries participated in the World Congress.

 

Mr. Manindra Chaudhuri, President, AIIMT described the present situation of BLS in India. He added that the education and Training, recruitment policy, career structure etc. of BLS profession are most irregular, unplanned and neglected in India. He stressed that BLS are the key personnel and backbone of the diagnostic Laboratories but there is no Statutory Body to maintain the standard of the profession. He demanded that immediately Medical Technology Council should be introduced in India. Otherwise, it is impossible to maintain the quality of diagnosis and treatment of patients.

 

Shri Asim Gan, Organising Secretary explained the importance of the National Congress and welcome delegates who have participated from all over India.
